A man arrives on an island in western Japan, unaware of his identity and past. As he negotiates what seems to be a theme park and collection of museums, he gradually realises his connection with the place and one particular film from the 1950s. Memories of the film and his relationships with stars of the past whom he has directed merge with his uncertain actions now in this present, on which he has only a tenuous hold.
