Only Britain’s most audaciously controversial poet, Jeremy Reed, rightly called by the Independent ‘British poetry’s glam, spangly, shape-shifting answer to David Bowie’ would have dared to conceive a book of electrifying essays focusing on Oscar Wilde as a punter picking up rent boys at Piccadilly Circus, the conspiratorial underworld ethos of London's gay demimonde in the 1890s inhabited by Wilde and the notorious Count Eric Stenbock, and linking the patronage of older men acquired primarily by outstanding looks to both Bosie's relations with Wilde, and to the young David Bowie's managerial sponsorship by Ken Pitt. Analogies between Wilde and Bowie are further extended by ‘Oh, You Pretty Things’, a consummately detailed essay on how both Wilde and Bowie conducted their first US tours, largely in drag.
