“I was born in the small English village of Waldron in the Sussex Weald, a place of seemingly endless woods, narrow sunken lanes and sleepy half tile-hung cottages, where nothing much has changed in the landscape since the iron-making industry moved away in the mid eighteenth century. During my early teenage years I lived in a sixteenth-century farmhouse of exposed oak beams, and I spent a great deal of my time in hay-fields and meadows, playing up trees, in streams and in old barns. In many ways the backdrop to my childhood was quite idyllic, but in my imagination I lived elsewhere – deep behind German lines during World War Two, all over the world as an international spy, and even in weird futuristic dystopias inspired by the new 2000AD comic.”
